Youth Construction Academies

Youth Construction Academies offer hands-on training and classroom instruction preparing high school age youth for entry level jobs in the construction industry and to help them be more successful when applying for a trade apprenticeship positions. Academies start with local school districts, vocational educators and local employers committed to forming a path for young Alaskans from school to work in construction. They serve in-school and out of school youth, ranging from 17 to 24 years old.

Our Youth Academies offer students and young Alaskans a pathway and opportunity to see if they really want to pursue a career in construction. Students attend a two-three week intensive training session that increase basic academic skills in math and technical reading, and basic work skills for entry level jobs as carpenters, truck drivers or heavy equipment operators, for example.

Alaska Works started offering Youth Construction Academies in 2004 at St. Mary’s in partnership with the Lower Yukon School District, Yukon Delta Fisheries Development Authority, regional construction employers and the Denali commission. Today AWP works with ten school districts to offer academies. To learn more about Construction Academies read our booklet.

If you’re 18 or older, don’t miss this great learning opportunity!

Alaska Works Partnership’s Construction Academies offer basic construction training for adults,
18 and older. Many classes are taught at night and on weekends, allowing people to keep their
day jobs while training for better-paying careers in construction.

Courses may include basic carpentry, plumbing, electricity, drywall finishing, stick welding,
blueprint reading and construction trades’ math. Health and safety and other certification
courses are offered to those completing one or more core classes. Core classes are 50 hours of
training, except Welding (28 hours) and Math (10-20 hours).

A majority of our graduates either go on to work on construction-related jobs or enter
apprenticeship schools for further training.

The Anchorage, Fairbanks, Mat-Su and Kenai Peninsula Construction Academies have open enrollment for their spring 2009 Academies. Apply now and you’ll receive an Academy schedule when it becomes available.
