Jacob Buzby's Journey to Becoming a Journeyman Operator
Jacob Buzby’s career path began in early 2020, just before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and a few months before his 18th birthday. He had a clear goal: to pursue a career in construction. Referred to Alaska Works, Jacob wasted no time and enrolled in the Electrical Wiring class. Recognizing his drive and potential, he returned in early 2021 to further develop his skills, completing First Aid/CPR/AED training and Blueprint Reading. He also took his WorkKeys Test, all in preparation for applying to the IBEW in March 2021. Alaska Works supported his goals, helping him improve his interview skills along the way.
Although Jacob wasn’t accepted into the IBEW Lineman program in his first attempt, Alaska Works saw something special in him—maturity and ambition that stood out in someone so young. Understanding his readiness to begin his construction career, the AWP team encouraged him to explore the Operating Engineers path. Following a meeting with the Director of the Alaska Operating Engineers, it was clear that Jacob was a perfect fit. By July 2021, he was directly enrolled in the Alaska Operating Engineers Apprenticeship Program.
Jacob’s first major project took him to the Richardson Highway, where he gained valuable hands-on experience. He remained closely connected with Alaska Works throughout his journey, consistently demonstrating the dedication and responsibility he had shown from the start. His perseverance paid off, and on September 27th, 2024, Jacob successfully completed his apprenticeship, officially becoming a journeyman operator.
Jacob’s story is a testament to his hard work, determination, and the support provided by Alaska Works, setting him up for a successful and fulfilling career in his trade.
