Gary’s journey towards becoming an electrician began with the electrical pre-apprenticeship program he completed through Alaska Works Partnership in November 2017. That initial training set the stage for a rewarding career in the electrical field, laying a strong foundation in the skills and confidence he needed to progress.

Fast forward to November 2023, when Gary took the next big step by starting an apprenticeship with IBEW Local 1547. He began working on projects at Fort Greely for Alcan Electric and, upon the project’s conclusion, transitioned to Fort Wainwright, contributing to the new barracks construction until October 2024. Currently, he is advancing his career as a first-year apprentice in the AJEATT Wireman Apprenticeship program.

The training Gary received through AWP and IBEW, along with his hands-on experiences, has significantly shaped his career. It not only honed the skills he developed early on but also opened new opportunities for growth. His training has proven to be an asset, not just in his civilian career but also in his role as a Construction Electrician Petty Officer First Class in the United States Navy Reserve. The skills he's gained have enhanced both his professional and military capabilities, giving him the confidence to excel in the electrical trade.

Although Gary had always envisioned a future as an electrician beyond his Navy career, it was the encouragement from AWP and his family that gave him the push to commit fully to this new path. Now, with a promising career ahead, his only regret is not starting sooner.

To those considering a similar career change, Gary shares this advice: “The hardest part is deciding to take that first step. The rest of the journey will fall into place after that. If you're seeking a challenge and want to open doors to a better future, take that first step.”
