Michael's journey is a testament to perseverance and ambition. While serving his country in the Army Reserves, he didn't let his commitments deter him from pursuing his dreams. When he wasn't fulfilling his reserve duties, he found employment as a substitute teacher in his hometown of Chefornak, Alaska.

Determined to expand his horizons, Michael set his sights on obtaining his driver’s license, a vital step toward achieving his goals. Concurrently, he seized the opportunity to enhance his skills by successfully completing a rigorous 40 hour Carpentry training course in Anchorage. This training not only sharpened his abilities but also ignited a passion for carpentry that had been brewing since his high school days when he built his own garage.

With his newly acquired driving skills and carpentry expertise, Michael was now ready to take the next leap forward. Passing his driving test marked the final milestone in his journey to apply for the Carpenter’s apprenticeship program. His dedication paid off when he received the news of his acceptance, signaling the beginning of his official training.

Reflecting on his journey, Michael expressed gratitude for the support he received from Alaska Works, which went above and beyond to cover his travel expenses to Anchorage for the Carpentry training in March 2023. This assistance not only facilitated his participation but also underscored Alaska Works’s commitment to empowering individuals like Michael to pursue their career aspirations.

In July 2023, Michael took the bold step of applying to the Carpenter’s apprenticeship program, fueled by his unwavering determination to excel in the field. His hard work and perseverance bore fruit when he received the eagerly awaited acceptance letter on August 28, 2023, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his professional journey.

As Michael embarks on his apprenticeship, he remains steadfast in his resolve to leverage his newfound skills and knowledge to carve out a brighter future for himself. His story serves as a testament to the transformative power of determination, resilience, and unwavering support in the pursuit of one's dreams.
